About Punta Cana International Airport
Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) is one of the few privately owned and operated airports in the world, built and run by Grupo Puntacana rather than a state authority. It is instantly recognisable for its open-air, palm-thatched terminal buildings, styled after a traditional Dominican caney, with passengers walking between check-in, security and gates largely in the open air rather than enclosed corridors.
Commercial passenger traffic is split between two main terminals, Terminal A and Terminal B, alongside a smaller domestic terminal and a separate VIP/private aviation terminal. PUJ is the busiest airport in the Caribbean by international passenger volume, driven almost entirely by the resort coastline it serves.
Getting from Punta Cana Airport to the resorts
A pre-booked transfer to Bávaro, the busiest resort strip, takes around 20 minutes. Cap Cana to the south and Uvero Alto to the north are further out. There is no public transport aimed at visitors and taxi ranks can mean a wait and an unclear price, so a pre-booked private transfer straight to the resort gate is the standard way to travel from this airport.
Terminals and pickup points
Punta Cana International Airport’s passenger facilities are split as follows:
- Terminal A: the main international terminal for most scheduled and charter airlines.
- Terminal B: additional international arrivals and departures during peak periods.
- Domestic and VIP terminals: separate buildings for domestic flights and private aviation.
Pre-booked transfer drivers wait just outside the arrivals exit of the relevant terminal with a name sign, confirmed in your booking.
Common transfer routes from Punta Cana Airport
Typical routes from PUJ include:
- PUJ to Bávaro resorts, around 20 minutes.
- PUJ to Cap Cana, around 15 to 20 minutes.
- PUJ to Uvero Alto, around 45 to 50 minutes.
- PUJ to Punta Cana Village and the marina, around 15 minutes.
Most bookings from this airport are round trips, since the arrival transfer and the return airport drop-off are usually arranged together from the same resort.
Booking your Punta Cana Airport transfer
Compare licensed local operators on this site for any PUJ route. You get one fixed price up front, meet-and-greet at the terminal, flight tracking and free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup. Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Alipay, iDEAL, Wero and PayPal are all accepted.
Given how many flights land within the same few hours during peak winter season, booking your vehicle in advance rather than relying on a taxi rank helps avoid queues at arrivals.
