Pulkovo Airport (also known as PIE Airport) - is an international St. Petersburg airport. It serves the citizens of Sant Petersburg as well as Leningrad Oblast, moreover is the hub for Rossiya Airlines. It’s one of the largest airports in Russia and Eastern Europe as well as the third busiest airport in Russia (after Moscow airport - Domodedovo and Sheremetyevo) serving around 16 million passengers yearly.

St. Petersburg airport or Pulkovo Airport holds one big terminal, serving both domestic and international flights in the same building. It has a capacity of 17 million passengers yearly and has 4 floors, 88 Check-in counters, 17 departure gates and 110 aircraft parking stands. The interior of the new airport was designed by Grimshaw Architects (famous for award winning design of Southern Cross railway station) and is in harmony with distinctive designs and style of Saint Petersburg city. The new Terminal also sought many artistic sculptures and paintings to give a sense of thriving culture to passengers. Four sculptures from Dmitry Shorin's project named I Believe in Angels decorate the departure hall.

Best transfer from Pulkovo airport to city center

Pulkovo airport is located 23 kilometers south of Saint Petersburg city center (Palace Square). There are currently three ways to reach Saint Petersburg center from Pulkovo:

  • Train: The train station is 15 minutes walk from Pulkovo second terminal. In order to arrive to the center it’s needed to change train lane halfway thru your journey. The whole trip would take around 45 minutes to and hour.
  • Buses: There are three city buses that run between the nearest Moskovskaya metro station and the airport. However, it’s advisable to use it only if you are traveling to nearby Pulkovo Airport destinations as to get to the city center it would not only take an hour and a half but you will have to change buses three times.

St. Petersburg (also known as Petrograd or Leningrad) hold around five million citizens and is a federal city within Russia. The summers usually are short, warm and humid with moderately cold and wet winters (comparable to Helsinki). The Neva River within the city limits usually freezes up in November–December and break-up occurs in April. The frost-free period in the city lasts on average for about 135 days and is quite variable all year around.

The historic architecture of the city center, mostly consisting of Baroque and neoclassical buildings which have been largely preserved. On the southern part, left bank of the Neva, lie the Admiralty building, the vast Hermitage Museum (which includes the baroque Winter Palace), also situated on the left bank of the Neva, is the main avenue in the city. Many notable landmarks are situated to the west and south of the Admiralty Building, including the Trinity Cathedral, Mariinsky Palace, famous Mariinsky Theatre, Saint Isaac's Cathedral (largest in the city), and Senate Square. Southern suburbs of the city feature former imperial residences, including Petergof, with majestic fountain cascades and parks, Tsarskoe Selo, with the baroque Catherine Palace and the neoclassical Alexander Palace.

Saint Petersburg is a major transport hub : with buses carrying up to three million passengers daily, serving over 250 urban and a number of suburban bus routes. Saint Petersburg Metro Underground has 5 lines with 67 stations, connecting all five railway terminals, and carrying 2.3 million passengers daily. Furthermore, metro stations are often elaborately decorated with materials such as marble and bronze.

The crime dynamic in Saint Petersburg is tightly associated with the general social situation in the country. It has been decreasing from 2010 and has shown increasing improvement in crime against tourist. A Russian travel advisory on the Foreign Affairs website notes that while homosexuality is legal in Russia, LGBT Canadian travellers should avoid "displaying affection in public, as homosexuals can be targets of violence.
